We all (hopefully) try to eat healthy and make sure we consume enough fruits and vegetables. Not only does good food prevent illness and help you maintain health, it also can help your skin stay healthy!

1. Strawberries

Strawberries contain high levels of Vitamin C, which can fight against free radicals that cause illness. These free radicals can also damage your skin, creating fine lines and wrinkles as you age.  Eat more strawberries – maybe covered in chocolate 🙂

2. Olive oil

Olive oil contains anti-inflammatroy properties and antioxidants that prevent signs of skin aging.  Consuming small amounts olive oil can help your skin stay soft as well!

3. Pumpkin – MY FAVORITE!

I can eat pumpkin all year long – I love it!  I add it to my oatmeal, make pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie, pumpkin pasta sauce (not kidding), roasted pumpkin, etc.  Pumpkin contains Vitamins E, C, and A, which all benefit the skin.  You know how strawberries prevent free radicals from aging the skin?  Well, pumpkin can do that too!

4.  Pomegranate

I absolutely LOVE pomegranate.  Pomegranate contains the most of every type of antioxidant than any other food.  It is a superfood.  It has major anti-inflammatory effects, making it really good for your skin.  You can never go wrong with pomegranate.

5.  Water

Yes, water.  You want to keep hydrated, of course, but drinking water also helps your skin stay hydrated and healthy!  Stay away from all that sugary fruit juice and soda.  Water is always the best choice.

6.  Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate (70% cocoa or more) also contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory effects.  It can also reduce your stress levels and make you happy! (As I stated in my post Foods that Fight Stress)  Less stress, less breaking out, and more time to be happy – and have smooth, healthy, and glowing skin!

7. Avocados, Nuts, & Salmon

I put all these in one category because they all contain healthy fats and omega-3 fatty acids. These healthy fats (polyunsaturated and monounsaturated) are a natural moisturizer for your skin and they have many healthy benefits.  So don’t be afraid to eat fat – just make sure it’s the good fat!

8. Yogurt

Yogurt contains calcium, which helps prevent cracks and dry skin. B Vitamins are also found in yogurt. These vitamins can help regenerate cell growth, prevent damage from free radicals (like I stated above), and helps the skin stay hydrated. Eating plain yogurt is best, but if you’re like me and literally HATE the bitter taste of plain yogurt, go for Siggi’s yogurt! It contains more protein than sugar in all flavors! 🙂

 

As I write these posts about foods that fight stress, promote sleep, and help your skin stay healthy, I realize that there are some trends.  The foods that repeat are avocado, nuts, salmon, dark chocolate (thank goodness – I can’t go a day without eating some sort of chocolate!), and of course we all know water is important.  Just think about how eating healthy and living a healthy lifestyle can make you feel!  Indulge, of course, but if you’re eating right on a daily basis with some treats in between, you’ll be on your way to feeling like your best YOU!
